LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Maryland baseball team dropped its Tuesday night contest with Liberty, 5-4, at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
The Terrapins (14-15, 1-2 Big Ten) scored the first run before making a furious comeback in the eighth, but Liberty walked off to win it in the ninth. Maryland starter Tayler Stiles went six innings and gave up just two earned runs.
Maryland took advantage of four walks in the first to plate a run. Junior Madison Nickens and freshman Nick Dunn received free passes before executing a double steal with one out to put runners on scoring position. Freshman Marty Costes drove in Nickens with an RBI groundout to give the Terps the lead.
Kevin Biondic and Kevin Smith drew consecutive walks to load the bases, but Anthony Papio flied out to end the inning.
Liberty grabbed a pair of runs in the third after a Madison Nickens error before plating single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 4-1 lead.
The Terps scored three runs in the eighth to tie the game. Nickens drew a four-pitch walk to reach before Costes legged out and infield single after a pair of outs to put two on. Biondic followed with a walk to load the bases.
All three runners moved up and Nickens came in to score on a wild pitch from Parker Bean. Smith then laced a 2-1 pitch into the gap in right center for a two-RBI double. Papio drew a walk, but Dalton Britt saved a run for the Flames with a great diving stop and throw to first to put out the pinch hitting Jamal Wade.
Liberty won the game on a walk-off double off Mike Rescigno from Andrew Yacyk that plated DJ Artis.
Maryland returns to action Wednesday against James Madison. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the game can be heard live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
