WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior shortstop Kevin Smith homered twice for the second consecutive game and drove in five RBIs to lead the Maryland baseball team past UNC Wilmington, 10-6, at Brooks Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Terrapins (13-7) hit three home runs and never trailed after a three-run first inning. Junior RHP Ryan Hill picked up the win in relief, tossing three and a third of scoreless ball with six strikeouts.

Maryland jumped out early via the long ball with sophomore Marty Costes launching a two-run shot off Clay Lockamon to make it 2-0. Junior Will Watson then reached on an error before moving up when Madison Nickens walked. The runners took another base when Lockamon balked and Watson scored on a Smith ground out.

Starter Tayler Stiles got through two and two thirds innings for the Terps, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the first and striking out the side in the second. Hill got Maryland out of a bases loaded jam created by Stiles in the third with a strikeout.

With Hill rolling on the mound, Maryland blew the game open in the fifth. Back-to-back singles from Costes and Dunn before walk issued to Watson loaded the bases for Nickens, who hit a sac fly that scored Costes.

Smith then hit an opposite field three-run shot off the foul pole in right to put Maryland up 7-2. After UNCW grabbed a run back in the seventh, Smith hit a solo shot to left to keep the Maryland lead at five.

The Terps tacked on a few insurance runs in the ninth with Dunn and Zack Jancarski scoring on errors by the catcher. Maryland would give up a couple runs in the ninth, but redshirt junior Ryan Selmer shut the door.

Maryland returns to action as it open up conference play this weekend with a three-game set against Michigan at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. Game one is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday and fans can listen to the action live on the Maryland Baseball Network or watch live on BTN Plus. BTN will broadcast Saturday night's game nationally at 7 p.m.
