Terps Fall at High Point, 7-6

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Maryland baseball team attempted a furious rally in the final two innings, but fell to High Point, 7-6, at Williard Stadium Saturday night.

The Terrapins (33-19, 15-9 Big Ten) fell behind 7-2 after seven innings before scoring three in the eighth and one in the ninth. Junior Will Watson struck out to end the game with the tying run on second base.

High Point jumped on the Terps with a single run in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead after three off Maryland starter Tyler Blohm. Blohm tossed four innings on the day, giving up six hits and three earned runs.

Maryland would grab its first run of the day in the fourth inning. Senior Brandon Gum led off the inning with a single before going to second on Marty Costes' single to right. Gum would eventually score on a wild pitch to put the Terps on the board. Madison Nickens came in to score on a Gum sac fly in the fifth to make the score 3-2.

High Point pushed the lead to 7-2 with a single run in the sixth and a three-spot in the seventh. Two RBI singles off RHP Ryan Selmer were the highlights of the Panthers' seventh.

The Terps responded with three in the top of the eighth. After Gum singled to start the inning, sophomore AJ Lee hit a homer to left field to cut the deficit to 7-4. Dunn and Watson would reach on back-to-back singles before Nick Cieri slapped a pinch hit single to right to bring home Dunn.

The ninth saw junior Kevin Biondic lead the inning off with a single before he headed to second on a wild pitch. Biondic would make it to third after tagging up on a loud AJ Lee out in center. High Point's Josh Greene made a spectacular catch to rob the Terps' third baseman of extra bases.

Biondic scored on a wild pitch before Costes walked with two outs. Dunn extended the inning with a bloop single to left, but Watson struck out swinging to end the game.

Maryland and High Point contest game three of their series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Fans can listen to the game live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
