COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland was unanimously voted to repeat as Big Ten Champions by the conference coaches in a poll released by the conference offices today. Maryland captured both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles last year, and have won five regular season titles and three tournament championships since the conference's inception in 2015.
The team's top returning scorer Logan Wisnauskas and defensive anchors Jake Higgins and Brett Makar were named players to watch.
Wisnauskas is back for his fifth year with the program and will wear the esteemed No. 1 jersey for the Terps after another exceptional offensive campaign in 2022. The attackman finished the season 17th nationally in points per game (4.50), totaling 41 goals and a team-best 31 assists. The Sykesville, MD native is a three-time Inside Lacrosse All-American, a two-time All-Big Ten performer and ranks tied for third all-time in Maryland history with 231 points.
Higgins returns to the lineup for the Terps in 2022 after appearing in nine games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. Higgins has been impressive as one of the team's primary short stick defensive midfielders since transferring from Cleveland State in 2020, picking up 22 ground balls, causing five turnovers, scoring a goal and recording an assist in 15 games for UMD. Â Â
Makar put together a breakout year last season for the Terps on the defensive end, totaling 48 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers on his way to a Second Team All-American nod from IL. The Yorktown Heights, N.Y. helped pace Maryland's defensive unit to just over 10 goals allowed per game, and consistently drew the opposition's toughest assignment every game. The senior was also named First Team All-Big Ten and a 2021 Big Ten All-Tournament Team nominee.
The Terps faceoff their 2022 campaign on Saturday, February 5 against High Point at Maryland Stadium.
