Raleigh, N.C. -
Maryland's men's tennis team saw its season come to an end today with a 4-0 loss to Duke University. The Terps record this season is the best that head coach Jim Laitta has seen in over 10 years.
The Blue Devils, whose three doubles teams are nationally ranked, claimed the first point of the match. No.41 Jason Zimmerman and Ludovic Walter defeated Pierre Rudder (Port of Spain, Trinidad) and Rory Theis (Bloomington, Minn.), 8-2.
Freshman Scott Peters (Hopkinton, Ma.) and sophomore David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) made a strong showing against Johnathan Stokke and Peter Shultz in the No. 3 doubles spot. Peters and Reichsfeld lost to the 48th- ranked duo, 8-5.
Singles action did not go any better for the Terrapins. The top three seeds for the Terps were swept, giving Duke the go ahead to the semifinals. Rudder was defeated by 30th-ranked Phillip King, 6-0, 6-1. He finishes his rookie season with an 11-11 record.
Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) saw his career as a Terp end with his 6-0, 6-1 loss to No. 34 Michael Yani. The senior co-captain closed out his fourth season with an 11-11 record.
The Terps finish the season 10-12, 0-9 in conference action.
