COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland will make its 2016-17 dual match debut on Sunday, November 20 when the team travels to wrestle Lock Haven University and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.

The Terps are set to wrestle the Bald Eagles at 11:00 am and the Cavaliers at 3:00 pm at Memorial Gymnasium. Maryland enters Sunday's contests after producing a handful of champs and placers in its two early season open tournaments. Maryland will also enter wrestlers in the Wolfpack Open hosted by NC State on Sunday.  

 

Terps in the polls

  • Tyler Goodwin and Alfred Bannister both remained ranked in the InterMat Wrestling Individual rankings on November 15. Goodwin is tabbed as the #12 133-pounder in the country, while Bannister remained ranked #17 in the 149-pound weight class.  
  • Goodwin and Bannister are also ranked in the TrackWrestling individual (#15 and #17 respectively) and TheOpenMat.com individual rankings (#11 and #12 respectively).
  • Goodwin was ranked 20th in the nation at 133 pounds in the latest Amateur Wrestling News (AWN)  individual rankings.
  • Goodwin was a 2013-14 NCAA qualifier and went 7-2 last year for the Terps, including his first two career Big Ten victories over Minnesota's Sam Brancale (F: 4:27) and Purdue's Cody Pae (Dec, 11-7). Goodwin's only losses a season ago came at the hands of eventual All-Americans.  

 

A Look at the bald eagles

  • Lock Haven will also make its 2016-17 dual match debut on Sunday, having competed at the Clarion Open (Nov. 6) and Journey Classic (Nov. 13) so far this season. 
  • Lock Haven finished 9-9 last season in duals and 3-3 in the EWL. The Bald Eagles took third at the EWL Championships, and produced two NCAA qualifiers who have both since graduated. 
  • Maryland is 1-1 all-time against Lock Haven. The last time the teams met in 1992, the Bald Eagles earned a 25-9 victory.

A LOOK AT THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia enters Sunday's contests 0-2 on the year, dropping both of its early season dual matches to Michigan (24-9) and Central Michigan (22-10) on November 11 and 13 (respectively).
  • The Cavaliers finished 6-7-1 last season and 1-4 in the ACC. The squad took fourth at the ACC Championships and produced five NCAA qualifiers.
  • Redshirt junior George DiCamillo (141) just missed out on All-America honors last season, and is currently No. 9 in his weight class in the latest InterMat Rankings.
  • The Terps will reignite a classic ACC rivalry on Sunday when they square off against the Cavaliers. Maryland holds a 40-23 lead in the all-time series between the schools, though Virginia pulled off a 16-15 when the teams last met back on January 31, 2014 in Charlottesville. Both Tyler Goodwin and Billy Rappo (and assistant coach Jimmy Sheptock) wrestled for the Terps in that match, with Goodwin pulling out a 12-6 victory.

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHEAST

  • Redshirt junior Tyler Goodwin (133) and redshirt sophomore Alfred Bannister (149) starred for the Terps in the squad's season debut on November 6, each defeating a ranked opponent while winning their respective brackets at the Southeast Open.
  • Goodwin beat 18th-ranked Jamal Morris of NC State in the semifinals, knocking off the Wolfpack grappler in a wild 17-16 match.
  • In his career debut at 149 pounds, Bannister defeated No. 17 Michael Pongracz of Chattanooga 7-6 en route to a 5-0 day.
  • In all, the Terps produced three champs, two finalists, a third place, a fourth place and a fifth place finish on the day.
  • UMD's third champion was redshirt freshman David-Brian Whisler (197), who won five straight matches in the 197-pound bracket to start his season. Whisler was 8-3 in his first season for the Terps, and has a chance to surpass his true freshman win total in the first month of the season.
  • True freshmen Brandon Cray (125) and Alex Vargas (125) finished third and fourth (respectively) in the 125-pound freshmen/sophomore bracket. After Vargas topped Cray 9-4 at wrestle-offs, Cray evened the series with a 10-7 decision over Vargas in the third place match
  • Not to be overlooked, redshirt freshman Danny Boychuck (157) rattled off five wins (including four bonus point victories) to finish fifth in the field of the 157-pound freshman/sophomore division.

 

CRAY HIGHLIGHTS DAY AT BEARCAT OPEN

  • Freshman Brandon Cray highlighted Maryland's performers at the Bearcat Open on the campus of Binghamton University on November 13, placing second in the 125-pound bracket. The Steinert, N.J. native went 4-1 on the day, racking up three bonus point victories to make his second career podium appearance as a Terp.
  • Several other Terps turned in solid days on the mat, including sophomore Wade Hodges (157), who finished 4-2 on the afternoon. After surrendering a close decision in his opening match, Hodges posted four straight wins, including two pins, to advance to the sixth round of the consolation ladder.
  • Redshirt Freshman Sam Rowell (174) also placed for the UMD, winning four matches on the day to finish sixth at 174.

  • Maryland will head to New York City for the fifth annual Grapple at the Garden at Madison Square Garden on November 27. The Terps are scheduled to face Princeton and Columbia at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm (respectively).
