COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Tayler Stiles tossed five strong innings and the offense scored four times in the sixth as the Maryland baseball team secured a 6-2 win over UMBC at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Tuesday night.
The Terrapins (31-15, 14-7 Big Ten) saw Stiles notch the best outing of his season, throwing up five zeros in five innings while striking out six. Sophomore Nick Dunn notched two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.
Dunn gave Maryland the lead in the first, slashing a single to center field to bring home senior Brandon Gum.
From there, Stiles went to work. The Bowie, Md., held the 1-0 lead through his five innings of work while scattering four hits. He did not walk a batter.
Junior Ryan Hill replaced Stiles in the sixth inning, and UMBC pulled ahead with a two-run homerun in the top half of that inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Maryland responded with four runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Junior Zack Jancarski hit a double off the wall, bringing senior Madison Nickens home to tie the score at 2-2.
The Terrapins rolled with that momentum and took the lead on Gum's single that plated Jancarski from third after a stolen base.
After Marty Costes was hit by a pitch, both runners moved up on a fielder's choice. Sophomore AJ Lee then hit a two-run single, putting Maryland up 5-2.
Maryland's final run came from Dunn's solo home run in the final inning. It was Dunn's second homer of the year.
Sophomore John Murphy pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game for the Terps, earning his first career save.
Maryland will welcome Northwestern this weekend for the Terps final home series of the season. Action for Friday's game is scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on BTN Plus or listen on the Maryland Baseball Network.
